Carnival & Circus Party

Mini Chairs Atelier · Updated August 2026

A theme that scales — it works for eight children in a backyard and for eighty at a school fair.

Carnival is the most scalable theme here. The structure — a set of stations children move between at their own pace — works identically for eight children and eighty, which is why it's the go-to for joint parties and school events.

The stations

Three to five is right. More than five and half of them sit unused; fewer than three and queues form. Each needs to be genuinely five minutes or less:

The palette

Red and white stripes with cream and a warm yellow. Stripes on one surface — the backdrop or the runner. Bunting overhead does more for the carnival feel than anything at table level, because it's what people see when they walk in.

Food that fits

Popcorn boxes, hot dogs, cotton candy, lemonade. This is the one theme where classic carnival food is the correct answer and anything more refined feels off-message. Popcorn boxes with names double as favour bags at the end.

What we bring

Kid-height tables for the eating zone, kept separate from the game stations so food doesn't migrate around the yard. For larger parties, two or three table clusters rather than one long run — children arrive at the food in waves, not together.

Frequently asked questions

How many game stations do you need for a carnival party?

Three to five. More than five and several sit unused; fewer than three and queues form. Each game should take five minutes or less, and the prize table should work on tickets exchanged at the end rather than a prize per game.

What carnival games work for young children?

A duck pond works for under-fours who can't manage aiming games. Ring toss with bottles is the most reliable all-round game, and a bean bag throw made from foam board with cut-out holes is cheap and durable. Face painting always draws the longest queue, so staff it.

How do you lay out a carnival party?

Keep the eating zone separate from the game stations so food doesn't migrate around the space. For larger parties use two or three table clusters rather than one long run, since children arrive at the food in waves rather than all together.
