DIY Mini Pumpkin Place Cards for an Autumn Kids' Table
Unbreakable centerpiece and assigned seating in one, for about a dollar a head — and they last the whole season.
Two problems, one solution. A children's autumn table needs a centerpiece that nobody can knock over and break, and it needs assigned seats — because a named seat is remarkably effective at keeping a four-year-old in it.
Mini pumpkin place cards do both, cost about a dollar each, and last the whole season.
What you'll need
- Mini pumpkins, one per guest plus 3–5 spare (3–4″ across, flat base)
- Cream or white acrylic paint + a small flat brush
- A fine paint pen — gold, bronze, black or white
- Twine, thin ribbon or raffia
- A few sprigs of eucalyptus, rosemary, or dried leaves
- Damp cloth

How to make them
Choose and clean the pumpkins
Pick mini pumpkins 3–4″ across with a flat base so they don't roll. Wipe each with a damp cloth and dry completely — paint and pen skid off a dusty or waxy skin. White ‘Baby Boo’ pumpkins take lettering best; orange ones need a painted panel first.
Paint the name panel (optional but worth it)
Brush a small oval of cream or white acrylic onto the front of each pumpkin where the name will go, and let it dry 20 minutes. This one optional step is what makes the names readable from across the table instead of disappearing into the skin. Skip it on white pumpkins.
Letter the names
Write each name with a fine paint pen — gold, bronze or black all read well on cream. Practice the name once on paper first; pumpkins are curved and the second attempt is always better than the first. Keep letters large and simple. Ten minutes to dry.
Add one natural detail
Tie twine, ribbon or raffia around the stem and tuck in one sprig — eucalyptus, rosemary, a dried leaf. One detail per pumpkin, repeated identically. Consistency across the set is what makes them look designed; varying them makes the table look cluttered.
Place them and let them double as the centerpiece
Set one at each seat, then cluster the leftovers in odd numbers (three or five) down the center of the table, some raised on small books or risers under the runner. Place cards and centerpiece become one thing — and nothing on the table is breakable, which at a children's table matters more than anything else.
This is one of the few table projects children can genuinely help with. Give them the twine-tying and the greenery-tucking, keep the paint pen yourself, and it becomes an activity the day before rather than a chore. Older children can letter their own.

Number pumpkins for a birthday

How long they last
Undamaged mini pumpkins keep six to eight weeks somewhere cool and dry — so make these in late September and they'll carry a birthday, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Don't cut or carve them; an intact skin is what keeps them. Wipe rather than wash before you paint, and keep them off a hot radiator or a sunny windowsill.
Setting the rest of the table
