DIY Mini Wreath Chair Backs for a Holiday Kids' Party

Chair backs are where a children's table goes from “set” to “styled,” and at the holidays a small wreath is the easiest thing to hang there. These are six-inch faux-greenery rings, tied on with ribbon so nothing is pinned or glued to the chair, and they come off in seconds at the end of the party. Twelve chairs takes about twenty minutes.

What you'll need

Step 1: Build (or fluff) the wreaths

If you bought ready-made mini wreaths, simply bend the greenery outward so they look full. If you’re using wire rings, wrap two or three picks around each ring with floral wire until the metal disappears. Keep them small — a wreath wider than the chair back looks like a costume.

Step 2: Add one accent

Wire on a single mini ornament, a cluster of faux berries or one small bell at the bottom of each wreath. One accent per wreath, the same on all twelve, is what makes them look like a set.

Step 3: Tie the ribbon

Cut 30 inches of ribbon per chair. Thread it through the top of the wreath, bring the ends up over the chair back and tie a simple bow at the top rail. The wreath should hang in the center of the chair back, a few inches below the top.

Step 4: Hang the name tag

Punch a hole in a cardstock tag, write the child’s name in gold and tie it to the ribbon just above the wreath. Now every child finds their seat by name, and you’ve skipped place cards entirely.

Step 5: Take them home

At the end of the party, untie the bow and the wreath lifts off with no damage to the chair. Each child can carry theirs home — a wreath for the bedroom door beats another bag of candy.

Our styling note

Wreaths read best on chairs with an open back — our Sophia, Amelia and the new Flor daisy chair all frame a six-inch wreath perfectly. Match the ribbon to your table’s accent color (red, forest green, ice blue or blush) and keep the greenery natural rather than glittered, so the chairs and the table stay the stars.
