A No-Sew Kids' Party Table Runner in 20 Minutes
A runner is the fastest way to make a children's table look styled — it draws a line of color straight down the center and gives every centerpiece a stage. No sewing machine, no hemming, no problem.

What you'll need
- 1–2 yards of fabric — cotton, linen, gauze or tulle all work
- Fabric scissors
- Iron-on hem tape (optional, for crisp edges) and an iron
- A measuring tape
Step 1: Size it to the table
Cut the fabric 14–16 inches wide, and long enough to drape 10–12 inches past each end of the table. On children's tables the drop should stay short — long trailing fabric plus little hands is a physics experiment you don't want.
Step 2: Choose your edge
Three no-sew finishes, three moods: iron-on hem tape for a crisp tailored edge, gently frayed edges for a relaxed linen look (pull threads along the cut line until soft), or pinking shears for a sweet zigzag that never frays.
Step 3: Steam and lay it
A quick pass with the iron erases fold lines — wrinkles are the one thing that gives away a DIY runner in photos. Lay it dead center and let it drape evenly at both ends.
Step 4: Anchor the ends
Weight each draped end with something from the tablescape — a small pumpkin in autumn, a jar of blooms in spring — so an excited tug doesn't relocate the whole centerpiece line.
Our styling note
Match the runner to your palette's softest color, not its brightest — the runner is the backdrop, and the cake, florals and favors are the show. Against natural rattan or crisp white children's tables, a soft gauze runner in cream or sage looks straight out of a magazine.
