DIY Party Welcome Sign on a Budget

A welcome sign does something subtle and wonderful: it tells every guest, before they've seen a single table, that this party was planned. Here are three ways to make one — from fifteen minutes to a weekend craft — all under $20.

Method 1: The framed printable (15 minutes)

Design in Canva (free): the child's name huge in an elegant serif, "welcome to [name]'s party" small beneath, one motif matched to your theme. Print at a copy shop on 11×17 cardstock (a few dollars), and slide it into a thrifted frame spray-painted gold. Done, and it looks like stationery.

Method 2: The hand-lettered board (1 hour)

A white foam board or canvas, pencil guidelines, and one good paint pen. The secret to amateur lettering that looks professional: write in your normal handwriting, larger and slower, then thicken every downstroke. That single trick is 90% of "modern calligraphy."

Method 3: The mirror or acrylic sign (weekend upgrade)

A thrifted mirror plus a white or gold paint pen makes the trendiest sign at any event. Write directly on the glass (guidelines taped behind it), and it wipes clean afterward — one mirror, endless future parties.

The easel trick

Any sign leaning against a wall looks casual; the same sign on a stand looks styled. A tabletop easel is inexpensive, or borrow a kids' art easel and drape ribbon down the legs. Position it at the entrance at adult eye level, angled toward arriving guests.
