How to do under-the-sea without the whole thing turning into blue plastic.

Under-the-sea is one of the easiest themes to get wrong, because the obvious version — bright blue everything, plastic fish, foil curtains — photographs flat and reads cheap. The fix is to treat it as a color theme rather than a prop theme.

The palette

Seafoam, sand, pearl and coral, with one deep teal as the anchor. Iridescent accents in small doses — a shell, a ribbon, a cake topper — not across every surface. The moment more than about a fifth of the table is shiny, it tips.

What we bring

Neutral or pale chairs let the palette do the work. A kid-height table in a sand or cream tone reads as beach rather than swimming pool, which is the difference between the two versions of this theme.

Food that fits

• Blue and white layered jelly cups — the single most photographed item at any mermaid party.
• Goldfish crackers in a shell bowl, fruit skewers, white chocolate “pearls”.
• A cake with a plain buttercream finish and one shell or tail topper. Ombre is expensive and rarely improves the photo.

One activity, done well

A pearl hunt: hide plastic pearls or shells around the space and give each child a small net or bag. Works from three upward, takes ten minutes to set up, and it's the part they'll talk about.

Backdrop

Skip the foil fringe. A tissue paper flower wall in seafoam, pearl and coral reads as coral reef and photographs infinitely better — and it stores flat for next year.
